Virtual Sky Prescribes Daylighting Into Senior Housing For Alzheimer’s, Dementia And Sundowners Syndrome

Virtual Sky Prescribes Daylighting Into Senior Housing For Alzheimer’s, Dementia And Sundowners Syndrome

Many aging people associate moving into a senior living center as defeat. Seniors and their families often noticed a deterioration of body and mind after moving into retirement homes. But, thanks to the growing influence of technology in these homes, seniors are becoming more active and alert.
Virtual reality in these centers actually keeps the brain active, and even the simple yet effective reenactment of nature scenes on ceilings and walls (including moving birds, clouds, and sunsets) are doing wonders for the happiness and mental and physical capabilities of residents.

Virtual Sky Ceilings Help With Memory In Senior Housing
Senior living centers and retirement homes that incorporate an artificial or virtual sky can actually improve their residents’ memory. A study was done by the University of Michigan in 2008. They tested a group of participants’ short term memory twice, the second time after having 50% go for a short walk through a park and the other 50% around a city block. The group that had walked through nature previous to the second test, were 20% more accurate in their memory testing than the other group. And, when tested again after 50% were only shown an image of a natural park as opposed to a cityscape, the results were just as prominent.

Virtual Sky Ceilings Bringing Nature Inside Senior Housing
Residents in senior living centers often have mobility issues and can sometimes spend days at least staying indoors. Even if they can still walk, it takes time and sometimes immense pain to get outside on sunny days. Virtual Sky ceilings bring nature into the rooms of residents, allowing them to witness the weather outside as if they were really there. Even rain, storms, wind moving trees, and birds can be seen moving across the high-resolution screens. Just being able to witness nature without breathing in the physical benefits, can do wonders for the mind and its health.

Virtual Sky Ceilings Improve And Can Lead To Longer Lives In Senior Housing
Many studies have been done that linked nature to well-being, health, and healing, and we have cited them in other blogs. Seniors living in care centers could also be benefiting from longer, pain-free lives. A study done by Harvard Public Health found that women living near nature had lower rates of cancer, mental illnesses, and had a 12% lower rate of mortality.
